The Veldt is coming to The ‘Sco in Oberlin, OH on October 10th with doors at 9:30. Show is free with OCID and tickets will be sold at the door. They are a soul-infused shoegaze band formed in 1986 in Raleigh, North Carolina. The main members of the band are Danny Chavis on guitar, Daniel Chavis on vocals, and guitarist-programmer Hayato Nakao. The Veldt is known for their classic shoegaze album Afrodisiac which is ranked in Pitchfork’s “The 50 best Shoegaze Albums of All Time” and have opened for acts such as The Pixies and Cocteau twins.
Their most recent album Illuminated 1989 was initially recorded by the Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie and was intended to be the band’s first album however it was shelved by Capitol Records. Between then it was finally released in 2023 by Portland-based Little Cloud Records and North Carolina-based 5BC Records. Despite delays due to label executives or racism, The Veldt has consistently stuck to their passion for music releasing 3 albums Marigolds (1992), Afrodisiac (1994), and Entropy is the Mainline to God (2022). If you have never heard of them until now, know that the band’s Danny and Daniel Chavis are Black shoegaze pioneers and have worked to redefine and break out of the mold that many Black artists have historically been boxed in to.
