Maxo Kream is the stage name of the 28-year old Emekwanem Ogugua Biosah Jr., a renowned artist from Houston. In his music, Maxo thoroughly explores the ways in which his life has been shaped by prisons, violence, and poverty. He conveys his experiences through poetic portrayals that illustrate the obstacles and roadblocks faced by young Black men in many American cities. He does not seek to be palatable for the larger white audience. His music is not something to be fetishized or commodified, but something to learn from.
Maxo’s work with artists such as Lil Uzi Vert, Paul Wall, Trippie Redd, and Joey Bada$$ serves as stark indications of Maxo’s prestige within the Hip-Hop community. In a Pitchfork article entitled, “In a World of Fakes, Maxo Kream Keeps it Very Very Real,” an interviewer asks him why the authenticity of his raps is so important. To this question, Maxo Kream responds, “Why wouldn’t it be? Nothing I did was fake.”
Maxo's most recent album Punken, released in January, has been lauded as his best and most complete work, with outlets like Pitchfork, FADER, Stereogum, and more giving it praise.
